Don’t Put Off Chimney Repair Services
Let’s say your dishwasher quits on you… While having to hand wash dishes isn’t the most fun job, it’s doable until you can afford a new one. In other words, putting off repairs or a replacement isn’t going to hurt anything in the long run.
There are lots of things like this around the home – things that, if they break down, holding off on repair services isn’t going to be a huge deal.
Your chimney, though, does not fall into this category. In fact, putting off chimney repair services can cost you a lot more in the end, as well as put your household at risk.
Any issues with your chimney or fireplace – even minor ones – will only worsen over time if left unattended. And things like cracks, gaps, or blockages in the chimney can increase the risk of chimney fires, gas leaks, and smoke exposure, putting those in your home in potential danger.
Then there’s the expense, factor. While shelling out the dough for chimney repair and replacement parts isn’t fun, the sooner you do it, the less it’s likely to cost in the end – as the issue will only spread and up your bill if neglected.
Here’s some specific examples:
- Chimney cap damage. So, your chimney cap is damaged and you decide to put off getting a replacement over the summer since you don’t use your fireplace until fall anyway. Only, your chimney cap is meant to protect your flue from clogging up with debris, as well as prevent animal entry, water damage, and more. Now, come fall, you have multiple leaks to address, and turns out you have to wait for a family of chimneys swifts (protected birds) to leave before you can light a fire.
- Flashing damage. You know your chimney flashing needs some work, but you want to save up a bit more before getting it fixed. You finally have the cash, and you call in a sweep who informs you that, while you were putting off repairs, a leak formed and now you need additional masonry repairs. Oh – and your interior woodwork is rotting because of it too. Your bill just went up significantly.
- Tuckpointing services. No one likes having workers on their property all day, making noise and scattering supplies…so you put off a tuckpointing job that you know needs done. What’s the worst that can happen? Well, the longer you mortar can flake and chip, the more water that can gain entry into your absorbent brickwork. Now, your chimney has a lot of internal damage and may be on the verge of collapse.
These are just a few examples of what might happen. And while we don’t want to scare anyone, we really do need to emphasize how important swift fireplace repair work is. If you’ve been putting it off, don’t wait. Reach out today!
