Lintel [Combustible]
Combustible lintels can still be found in old homes spanning across a fireplace opening. They are mostly exposed in plain sight but if renovations to improve the fireplaces performance occurred they can also be concealed. Historically people would cover them in materials such as tin or asbestos to try to protect them. The two major risks when these are in place are: a spark finding its way into the grain of the beam causing an ember fire to occur or the heat from the energy source causes the wood to breakdown through the pyrolysis processes until a fire occurs. We can thermally protect or replace these components.
