What Is a Chimney Cap? Why Is It Important?
Simply put, a chimney cap is a protective covering, or “hat,” that is installed on the top of a chimney. It’s affordable, quick to install when you hire a professional, and it doesn’t take up tons of space.
That said, don’t underestimate their importance. Chimney caps serve several important functions, all of which keep your chimney better protected. This includes:
- Protecting your chimney against water damage. Moisture is the main enemy of chimneys. Rainwater, snow, and sleet can all easily enter a chimney that’s left open and vulnerable, but a chimney cap stops these elements in their tracks. In turn, you avoid lots of issues – think rusting of the flue liner, deterioration of masonry, and damage to your firebox.
- Block outside debris from entering. One of the primary roles of a chimney cap is to keep debris, such as leaves, twigs, branches, etc., from entering the chimney flue. Debris accumulation inside the chimney can block airflow, increase the risk of chimney fires, and cause smoke or gases to back up into the home.
- Keeping animals out and away. Your warm, sturdy chimney is a safe haven for countless woodland critters. Chimney caps act as barriers to keep birds, squirrels, raccoons, and other animals from nesting or entering the chimney.
- Minimizing downdrafts in your flue. Downdrafts occur when wind blows down the chimney, causing smoke, gases, or even odors from the fireplace or stove to enter the home. Chimney caps are designed to minimize the occurrence of downdrafts.
- Serving as a spark arrestor. Sparks and embers usually stay confined inside of your firebox, but for the times they don’t, a chimney cap can serve as a blocker, ensuring they don’t land on flammable roofing materials (or a buildup of leaves on your roof).
